From Snapshot to Soulful: Painting Sebastian
When I first saw this photo of Sebastian, a sweet 14-year-old Siamese, I knew it was a moment worth slowing down for. He is all snuggly, cuddled up, and fast asleep on a bright pink blanket, completely at peace. While his family shared several other poses, this one truly captured the essence of Sebastian! It was pure joy to paint his commissioned portrait; I fell in love with his endearing pose instantly.
The Artistic Vision
For this commission, I wanted to lean into expressive realism. While I stay true to the heart and likeness of the photograph, I love letting the watercolor play. In the side-by-side images above, you can see how I used ‘happy accidents’—those spontaneous bleeds and soft edges created by working in wet-on-wet and dry-on-wet techniques—to bring Sebastian’s portrait to life, capturing his beauty exactly as God made him.
The Power of Pink
Honestly, it was also the perfect excuse to break out one of my favorite professional pigments: Daniel Smith Opera Pink! Using such a vibrant, joyful color for the blanket allowed Sebastian’s cool siamese tones to really pop, creating a beautiful balance of energy and rest.
A Personal Connection
I was especially honored to create this piece for a family who truly treasures their loyal companion. It’s these quiet, ‘shhh, don’t wake them’ moments that invite us to be still and enjoy the present. These glimpses are more than just portraits; they are a way to treasure the bond we share with our most loyal and loving companions.
