Muses, Messes, & Grumpy Potatoes: The Life of a Cat
Muses, Messes, & Grumpy Potatoes: The Life of a Cat
I love cats. Their curiosity and sudden bursts of silliness keep me constantly entertained and make them the perfect subjects for “art that slows the heart.” Whether it is a playful pounce or a quiet nap, these moments are true gifts.
The “Helpful’ Studio Buddy
Ki-Lani resting peacefully on a blanket sporting my “Beach In A Day” Series.
My work is inspired by my calico-masked studio buddy, Ki-Lani (who is als one of the faces of my brand). She keeps me inspired daily, though she occasionally “helps” by walking directly across my workspace or curling up on my keyboard.
Yes, sometimes she gets a bit of paint on her paws, and a colorful path forms across my desk! It is a literal “invitation to pause” as I clean up, but I cannot help but appreciate her loyalty and cuteness. She is my rumbly-tumbly ninja, performing stealthy sneak attacks on Macchi while she waits patiently for me to be ready for bedtime.
The “Grumpy Potato” Facade
Macchi, the Floral Grumpy Kitty,
Then there is Macchi, my daughter’s tortoiseshell and my first feline love. We were best buddies from the start and she often hung out with me in my studio until she moved away to college (Go War Eagles!). As an empty nester, I longed for my own studio companion, which led me to Ki-Lani (A Hawaiian name that means “Heavenly”—my little God sent buddy!).
Now that Macchi and my daughter moved back home, Macchi has put on a bit of a facade. I call her “Little Miss Grumpy Pants” because she acts just like Mr. Potato Head from Toy Story—far too dignified for the new cat’s antics. She is still all loveable underneath, but shhh…do not let Ki-Lani know!
The Life of a Cat Series
Siamese Cat-Par of “The Life of a Cat” Series by artist Amy Boardman in Huntsville, AL.
To honor their stealth and curiosity, I’ve started a new series: “The Life of a Cat.” My first three paintings explore a Siamese muse in three poses—from a dignified seat to a curious gaze—set against soft Daniel Smith Ultramarine Turquoise watercolor washes.
I am painting new poses weekly to grow this collection. If you have a fovorite photo of your own companion that captures their unique spirit, I’d love to see it! If it’s a great fit for the series (and you own the rights of the photo), your “ninja” or “grumpy potato” might just become the next subject in my new series.
