Discovering the Art-O-Mat: A Fun and Unique Artistic Encounter
Recently, my daughter and I had the pleasure of visiting the Jule Collins Smith Museum in Auburn, Alabama, where we discovered a stunning exhibit by artist Andy Yoder. The exhibit featured over 250 paper sculptures of Nike Air Jordan 5s, which I initially thought were painted shoes. However, upon viewing the exhibit, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the sculptures were made from discarded items such as cereal and soda boxes, bags, and posters. This exhibit reminded me of my graphic design days in college, where I also created 3D products and enjoyed the creative process. Seeing all of the shoes made from such a variety of repurposed products was a truly enjoyable experience.
As I continued to explore the museum, I stumbled upon a vintage cigarette machine that had been repurposed into an "Art-O-Mat". The machine housed a selection of miniature artwork by various artists, and my daughter and I were absolutely enamored with the concept. It was truly a unique and memorable experience.
We were both fascinated and decided to take part in the Art-O-Mat adventure by purchasing some art pieces. As fellow artists, it's important to support others on their creative journey. My daughter picked out a paper-mache bird-shaped painting while I selected a green macrame turtle key chain.
We were so inspired by our experience that we want to become part of the Art-O-Mat adventure and share our love of art and for repurposing and restoration as well. As someone who cherishes history, vintage items, and restoring old things like automobiles and cigarette machines, I'm a firm believer in repurposing and salvaging old buildings instead of letting them go to waste. In fact, my own father restored a vintage Ford car, which turned out amazing.
It's disheartening to see schools, malls, barns, and other buildings neglected and in disrepair while new ones are being built. That's why I wholeheartedly believe in the saying "waste not want not." Let's repurpose and refurbish what we have instead of abandoning it. Together, we can give old buildings or vintage items a fresh new look and preserve their unique history.
The best things in life are old, loved, and rescued!
XOXO,
